California is one of the last places you would consider having a water shortage, but the recent crisis made the entire nation much more aware of how important it is to not take our water resources for granted. Making an effort to conserve water now will help ensure that Florida does not have its own water crisis. Here are some ways you can save up to 25 percent on your water usage.

Check For Leaks

Even what appears to be a small drip can quickly add up. Go through your home and yard and check all faucets and sprinkler systems for signs of leaking and fix any you find. Many times, fixing a drippy faucet is a matter of simply replacing a washer or rubber seal.

Watch the Time

Watering in the early morning or late evening hours will be more efficient. We all know how hot the sun can get in the afternoon; this can cause water to quickly evaporate, leaving your yard and plants in need of a second watering to keep them alive. By watering at the preferred times, you enable the water to soak into the ground where it can be effective.

Install a Water Sensor

Installing a water sensor on your sprinkler will help keep you from over-watering. It automatically shuts off the system when the ground reaches a certain level of moisture. A shower sensor inside your home can be programmed to shut off the water after a specific amount of time. This helps you avoid overly long showers that waste water.

Turn it Off

Instead of getting a drink directly from the faucet, keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator, which will save wasted water. Don’t leave the water running while you brush your teeth or wash your dishes. Turn it on only when you actually need to use it. The same goes for washing fruits and vegetables. Run a pan full of water and scrub them rather than placing them under water. They will get just as clean and less water will be used.

Full Loads Only

Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when you have a full load. Both require the same amount of water when only half-filled. Consider washing smaller items by hand in a tub of water to save space in the washing machine for other clothing. If you have only a few dishes, save washing them until the dishwasher is full or run a small pan of soapy water and wash them by hand.

If All Else Fails

Using water resourcefully is not only good for the environment; it is also good for your wallet. Once you start becoming aware of your water usage, you will find even more ways you can cut back.
