When you have a clogged drain in your home, the first thing you should do is stay away from chemical drain cleaners! It isn’t necessary for you to call your plumber each time you have a clogged drain. There are several effective home remedies you can try, and none of these home remedies involve the use of harsh chemicals. Here are our top 3 home remedies for clogged drains!

1) Grab your ever faithful plunger!

When your toilet is clogged, you automatically reach for your plunger, right? This is actually the right thing to do! However, when it comes to a clogged kitchen or sink drain, many of us start to lose our cool. Instead of calling a plumber, we grab the nearest chemical drain cleaner. Spare yourself the exposure to the harsh chemicals by grabbing your plunger. 4 or 5 times around with a plunger can be quite effective at removing hair, stuck food particles, and other scum.

2) Baking Soda & Vinegar

Mixing baking soda and vinegar does cause a chemical reaction. You might have made a volcano out of it yourself when you were in elementary school. However, unlike chemical cleaners, the chemical reaction that these two elements produce is not harsh. Instead of eating the elements that are causing the clog, the baking soda and vinegar serves to loosen the particles which are stuck in the drain. The process may have to be repeated a few times in order to be 100% effective. You should add one tablespoon of baking soda, followed by two cups of vinegar, and five minutes later, follow this treatment with one quart of boiling water.

3) Hot Water & Dish Soap

If you have ever washed dishes by hand before, you know what a powerful degreasing agent dish soap can be, and the same principles can be applied to your clogged drains! Dawn blue dish soap is a highly recommended option. Two tablespoons of Dawn should be poured down your drain, followed by one quart of boiling water. You may have to repeat the treatment 2-3 times, but it will be quite effective.

If none of these home remedies work, then it may be time to call a professional plumber. Fenwick Home Services Company was founded and built with the mission to provide quality service combined with ethics and better business standards, which changed the plumbing industry in Northeast Florida.
